When you play a lot of "Euro" games, they all start to have a similar 'flavor'. The trick is figuring out what strategy consistently puts you in position to win. Although this game has a familiar feel to it(Translation - it is a Euro game), I too like the added component of 'strategic randomness' to accomplish your goals. Dice rolling at the start of each round determines how many of each resource players can claim. Sometimes you have to settle for less to meet immediate goals. Or you can load up for a big round later in the game. It's a fun game and with the first play under my belt, I look forward to the next play.
