The dice aspect of the game is what I actually really like about it. When a game has a static setup (ie, always the same), there's the possibility to develop strategies that nearly ensure victory. However, by adding the dice aspect, the game really becomes one of adaptation -- being able to shift strategies based on outcomes that were not expected.
Agreed!!! I actually think I ranked it higher than I should have, considering just how little I really ended up playing. It's hard to say that the game turned for the worse before I ever even had a turn, but it did. We (The Allies), probably needed to play the game perfectly to win, and very good to make it go a couple more rounds for a chance to win. I don't think we made any terrible decisions, but a collection of small mistakes and bad luck was just enough to lose. That said, what can be seen as a complaint is also what makes the game so good: Capitalizing on tiny mistakes and good fortune are the things that swing this game from one side winning to the other, and even late in the game, a poor choice or terrible dice rolling can drastically sway the momentum, no matter what happened in previous rounds. It also doesn't hurt when Sergeant Schultz the foot soldier takes down a bomber and 2 tanks to win the game!!
Great game. Wish it were shorter to play. Only thing I don't like is the randomness of the dice rolling. As seen a good set of dice rolling can beat everything. |
