Dominant Species

Players take on the role of an animal species fighting for survival during an approaching Ice Age, by struggling for control of Terrain before it turns to tundra. Players will earn victory points, by adapting to terrain, migrating to other regions, via speciation, or by being the dominant species in an area of the board. Game play is driven by how each player uses his 5 Action Pawns (APs) in a turn. The player earning the most victory points wins the game.

Having now played it with the removal of the 4 cards, I wholeheartedly believe it's a better game without them. Should only be played with 2, 3 or 6 people. Great game if the group has the time.

I recently played the 3 person variant- 2 on 2 on 2. This variant was harder to play than the 2 person variant because you have less moves overall for your team to protect your weakest species. I really enjoy that this game is great regardless of how many people are playing.

Having played the 2 person variant- 3 on 3 with the lowest score on each team counting- I am amazed how well balanced the game is. I used to think Birds were weak but now I think they all have strengths if played appropriately. Reptiles and Insects need to diversify quickly to survive anywhere. Amphibians need to power up the water and Arachnids need to mass congregate and kill. Birds need to spread out and Mammals need to isolate themselves if possible. Such a great game!

I think removing the 4 cards would help the game. Not only would it have shaved half an hour due to one less round, it also removes the gaining of AP, which means the other rounds are shorter. With the 4 cards out, I think we could play it in under 3 hours. Granted, that's still a long game. As I told Flynn after the game, I think too many people were overly concerned about being Dominant on spaces during the early rounds instead of having the majority of species on the space (so they could score it).

I agree there is a lot to pick up and it can be frustrating because there is no way to have a plan go smoothly. I agree too it is really long but there is an option to remove 4 of the cards to shorten the game. Maybe that's the way to go. Scott- give it another try when you are well rested. I think you would enjoy it more.

I guess I will need to re-evaluate this at some point, but my issues were:
-This game is too long, and difficult to comprehend what the goal is, or more accurately how to achieve it. May have just been the first time playing that caused that.
-I was lapped...meaning someone scored 100+ points more than I did. Granted it was my first game, and things just weren't clicking, but come on, that's kind of crazy.
-There are just too many rules and things to worry about. I like strategy games, but this is over the top. too many moving parts to this game to worry about for me to enjoy it
-Even 3 hours in, I just wasn't getting it - really had no idea what I was 'supposed' to be doing because what I was doing didn't work at all. I'm not so sure I could do any better the next time even.

Maybe because it was a Friday night after getting up at 5:30 and working all day and my brain was already fried, but I struggled mightily to figure out a game plan and to keep my interest - I've played long games with this group before and do enjoy them, but I guess it was just not the right conditions for me that night. My overall ranking would have been even lower if purely based on how I felt when it was over, but I know everyone else seemed to really enjoy it, so I just missed something. Or was way more tired than I realized :)
